STAGE 1 - CRAFT CERTIFICATE
Syllabus
This course introduces you to many of the basic skills and techniques which are used in traditional and modern upholstery. These are taught through the undertaking of practical exercises, working with a variety of materials and through different processes. You will also gain knowledge in the properties and uses of textiles in relation to upholstery. |
KEY PROJECTS
- Upholstering a drop-in seat using modern materials
- Upholstering a drop-in seat using traditional materials
- Stitched and stuffed chair or footstool using traditional materials & methods with covering fabric & bottom cloth
- Sprung seated dining chair (traditionally upholstered and finished with fabric & bottom cloth)
- Sprung arm for an inset facing using traditional materials & methods. Calico to be stitched under the roll.
- Box cushion with piping and zip
- Bolster End with piping
- Upholstered and lined box and deep buttoned lid with a minimum of three diamonds using modern materials
- Scatter cushion with piping and zip - NOTE: either the box or the scatter cushion to include some form of decorative detail/fabric manipulation
- Portfolio containing notes and details of work in progress
- A written research project - Fabric Characteristics, identification and Appropriate Use
NOTE: The items in bold are assessment pieces that will be marked and graded by an external verifier from the AMUSF. In addition to the course requirements, students are also encouraged to be creative and develop their design skills.

The costs involved for undertaking Stage 1 consists of the following elements:-
ADDITIONAL ITEMS
Upon enrolment, each student will be given a Student's Handbook which will includes, course details, guidance notes and requirements for producing a portfolio and research project, a copy of the Maria's Traditional Upholstery Limited Risk Assessment Form, Workshop Health & Safety Guidelines.
All Students are expected to provide their own furniture to meet the requirements of the syllabus excluding exercise frames.
All Personal Protection Equipment will be provided by Maria's Traditional Upholstery Limited

- AMUSF Registration Fee
- Purchase of upholstery materials, work frames and sundry items
- Students own costs associated with the purchase of chair frames, fabrics, trimmings etc.
