STAGE 2 - INTERMEDIATE CRAFT CERTIFICATE

​This course builds upon and advances the skills and knowledge gained in Stage 1.  Larger items of furniture are introduced with more complex shapes with upholstered seats and backs.  Students will experience new processes and skills through the use of practical exercises and set projects.  This stage also raises the level of awareness and importance of symmetry and contouring/shaping of upholstered surfaces.

KEY PROJECTS

  • 'T' Shaped cushion with piping and zips
  • Tailoring includes fitting of caps and collars (samples)
  • Independent sprung front edge for a cushion seat
  • Traditionally upholstered armless chair including back & sprung seat
  • Upholstered post 1950s armchair using modern materials
  • Portfolio containing notes and details of work in progress
  • A written research project - History of Upholstered Furniture

NOTE:  The items in bold are assessment pieces that will be marked and graded by an external verifier from the AMUSF.  In addition to the course requirements, students are also encouraged to be creative and develop their design skills.

GENERAL COST INFORMATION
The costs involved for undertaking Stage 2 consists of the following elements:- 
  1. ​Course Fee
  2. AMUSF Registration Fee
  3. Purchase of materials, work frames and sundry items
  4. Students own costs associated with the purchase of chair frames, fabrics, trimmings etc.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS
Upon enrolment, each student will be given a Student's Handbook which will includes, course details, confirmation of course fees and associated costs, guidance notes and requirements for producing a portfolio, guidance notes for your research project, a copy of the Maria's Traditional Upholstery Ltd Risk Assessment Form, Workshop Health & Safety Guidelines.
All Students are expected to provide their own furniture to meet the requirements of the syllabus excluding exercise frames.
All Personal Protection Equipment will be provided by Maria's Traditional Upholstery Limited
